Tree Risk Assessment

Trees provide many benefits for our homes, businesses and properties. If a tree is defective, however, it may become a hazard. It is important to understand that tree owners have a duty to inspect and maintain their trees. All property owners should take reasonable steps to protect themselves by involving a qualified consultant or certified arborist.

Tree risk assessments are performed to identify, analyze, and evaluate the risk associated with your trees. Tree risk assessments can be performed on a single tree, several trees, on a large population of trees, and/or in combination with a tree inventory and management plan. Consulting Arborists who are ISA Certified and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified conduct these assessments.

ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) professionals are able to:

  • Assess your trees hazard potential
  • Provide a risk rating for your tree
  • Give recommendations about how to reduce or eliminate this risk, assuming options exist.

A tree falling into a playground, house, or crowded sidewalk could cause catastrophic harm.

If you are concerned about a tree, hire an ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified professional to provide you with an assessment and solutions!
Here is an overview of the typical tree risk assessment process:
  1. Investigate the different parts of the tree to gather data. The complexity of the investigation varies based on your needs.
  2. Evaluate all possible targets nearby. Targets are usually people or property.
  3. Combine data findings with knowledge of trees in order determine the likelihood that all or part of the tree will fall and the likelihood of it harming people or property should it do so.
  4. Finally, if necessary, provide possible solutions to reduce or eliminate this risk, assuming options are available.

The 3 levels of risk assessment

Level 1: Limited Visual Tree Risk Assessment
This is used when the tree will be viewed from a defined, limited perspective. It consequently has limitations as to which risks it may detect. This view may include an aerial patrol, a drive by windshield survey, a foot patrol, or photographs.

Level 2: Basic Tree Risk Assessment
This level involves looking at the tree’s roots, trunk, and crown to detect structural defects. It is a 360 degree, ground-based visual observation of the tree.

Level 3: Advanced Tree Risk Assessment
This level is anything in excess of level 2. It may include aerial inspection, tissue sampling and testing, resistance drilling, tomography, or TreeRadar.
